Danish Landscape
Oil on Canvas + Frame
This beautiful (and large) Danish Landscape was very dark and had many small perforations and tears. It had been previously relined. The treatment involved the removal of the relining (which wasn't really necessary) and repair of the tears and perforations using bridges made with linen threads - followed by dry and wet cleaning.

The frame was also in need of repair, with parts of the decorations missing. After filling the missing parts, the restoration process continued by matching the finish with the original gold paint.

Details - Before Treatment & After Treatment
After removing successive layers of oxidised varnish - what revealed most of the original colours of the painting - it was possible to see that there was a thick layer of overpaint in some areas, especially in the upper-left sky. The careful removal of this overpaint (made using a scalpel as well as solvents) showed a bright blue sky that changed the atmosphere of the painting.
Layers of oxidised varnish were hiding the true colours of the painting, and the frame had missing parts of decoration
The removal of varnish revealed a thick layer of dark grey overpaint in the sky
The removal of darkened old varnish and overpaint revealed a bright blue sky and a much more detailed landscape
