Portrait of Sir Thomas Browne

Oil on Canvas + Gilded Frame

This beautifully painted portrait of Sir Thomas Browne, 5th Viscount of Montagu, probably by John Greenhill (1644-1676) was very dark and matte. The removal of layers of surface dirt accumulated over the years, as well as the removal of a very discoloured varnish, showed the original colours.
The original frame, wood carved and water gilded, was also in need of repair. After filling the missing parts, the restoration process continued by matching the finish with the original gold leaf.
