Portrait of Suzanne

Oil on Canvas

This beautiful portrait of his wife Suzanne from French artist Émile Nickels (1850-1910) was very grey and had many small perforations and tears. There was also a tear at the right side of the sitter that had been roughly mended and painted over. The treatment involved the careful removal of the thick jute used to mend the tear and the overpaint - which revealed that the original tear was much smaller than originally thought.
Details - Before Treatment & After Treatment
The treatment continued with the repair of all tears and perforations using bridges made with linen threads - followed by dry and wet cleaning. After filling all parts of missing paint, a meticulous retouching was made to match the surrounding colours and blend in the necessary repairs that were made.
